Yarn Store Focus: Wild Fibers, Mount Vernon

A trip to the Skagit Valley is always a good idea, especially if you include a trip to one of our areas most inspiring yarns stores – Wild Fibers. Nestled amongst artisan shops, cafes and restaurants in the heart of Mount Vernon, you will be met with a friendly welcome and a fiber lover’s heaven. We caught up with store owner Brooke to find out more about what’s on offer in her delightful shop.

Please introduce yourself and let us know who we can expect to meet when we visit your store. My name is Brooke Jones and my talented, friendly and kind staff members are Miechelle, Lou Ann, Chris and Bethany. Additionally, if you visit during the Puget Sound Yarn Tour, you might meet Julie, who offers stellar technical and email support from afar the rest of the year.

Where can we find you and how long have you been there? WildFibers is situated in the historic downtown center of Mount Vernon, Washington and is surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Skagit Valley. We’re right next to the Lincoln Theatre at 706 S. First Street, just a short jaunt west of I-5. WildFibers has been open for twenty years!!!! I wonder how many miles of yarn we’ve wound during that time…it’s crazy!

What will we find when we visit your store? We offer a vast and ever changing variety of yarns, needles, books, notions and more to satisfy every maker. We focus on natural fibers including wool, silk, linen and cotton yarns. You can find most of our inventory on our website: wildfibers.net

What are your favorite yarns/fibers? I love working with woolly wools for color-work like Marie Wallin’s British Breeds and Léttlopi. I also enjoy blending laceweight mohair silk blends with other bases. It’s so much fun to blend colors this way; it’s just like painting! The translucent halo of mohair creates a subtle wash of color over the base and provides added softness and fluff. Tosh Silk Cloud, Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair and Rowan Kidsilk Haze are all shop favorites for this technique.

What’s on your needles right now? Oh my…how much time do you have? I have SO MANY WIPs. My current active projects are the Luminos Tee by Yamagara Knits, the Barbroe Top by Pernille Larsen and Sweater No. 15 by My Favourite Things Knitwear.

What’s your advice for a new yarn enthusiast?

Just dive in! Choose patterns, yarn, textures and colors that excite you. This will help keep you motivated to overcome challenges along the way. Don’t be afraid to tackle a new technique or an ambitious project. There is so much information available to guide you whether that comes in the form of a one-on-one lesson or a YouTube tutorial. What’s the worst thing that could happen? You make a mistake and have to rip out some of your work. But that was time spent doing something you enjoy anyway so it’s not time wasted!

What’s coming up in the future at your store?

We plan on offering group classes in the fall/winter. And of course we need to celebrate our 20 year anniversary with something fun…stay tuned for more details! Additionally, we have some wonderful new yarns and needles coming in and are constantly adding colors to our existing lines. We strive to keep things fresh and inspiring.

What are your recommendations for additional places to visit in your area?

Did you work up an appetite with all that yarn shopping? Try a cup of soup at Union Street Bistro, a molé enchilada at Catrina’s Tacos and Tequila, a BLT (with hand-cut fries of course,) at The LunchBox Diner or a movie themed pizza at District Brewing. For dessert, grab a hand pie wrapped in flaky pastry perfection at Pegasus Pie Co. or a decadent truffle at Forté Chocolates. You can take a stroll along the riverwalk afterwards to burn off some of those calories. There are lots of fun shops along First Street to peruse. We love the unique t-shirts at El Sage Designs and KLT Works, the wine and cheese selection at Skagit Valley Larder and the produce and ice cream at the Skagit Valley Food Co-Op.
