Yarn Store Focus: Seattle Yarn

It’s always fun to visit West Seattle, especially if you are on a yarn buying mission. A trip to Seattle Yarns is a must – you will find a great range of fiber, lots of project ideas and a friendly welcome in store. I caught up with yarn dyer, designer and one of the store owners, Destiny Itano, to find out what is currently on offer in this great local yarn shop.

Please introduce yourself and let us know who we can expect to meet when we visit your store: I’m Destiny, and you will also meet Cheryl and Elspeth

Where can we find you and how long have you been there? We are in the Admiral neighborhood of West Seattle. We have been at this location for about 2.5 years; for the 5 years prior to that, we were located about 2 miles South of here (also in West Seattle).

What will we find when we visit your store? Lots of lovely hand-dyed yarn, including our own in-house line, Huephoria Fibers (dyed by Destiny and Cheryl), notions, bags, books, embroidery and cross-stitch supplies, and spinning and weaving supplies (we are an Ashford dealer). Plus an incredibly lively and supportive community!

Do you have fiber recommendations for The Woolpack? Of course, we are partial to our own Huephoria Fibers yarns – our Honor Roll Sock (a merino/cashmere/nylon blend) is an absolute favorite; Spelling Bee Sock for bright, fun socks, and Student Council DK for everything from hats to sweaters. Cheryl has a soft spot for the luxury fibers, like cashmere and yak. Destiny likes fingering weight with a nice, tight twist (like Indigodragonfly Cariboubaa), and also loves the look and feel of Blue Sky Woolstok for worsted weight sweaters.

What’s on your needles right now? Destiny is finishing a Stephen West shawl in Huephoria Honor Roll Sock, has just started the Spatial Distortion: Swoop (a knit along at the shop), is plugging away at a crochet temperature blanket, has a Mussleburgh hat ongoing, and is working on a few designs of her own. Cheryl is working on a pair of mittens, a scarf, and the Spatial Distortion: Swoop knit along as well!

Do you have notions that you can’t live without? Cheryl loves her AddiToGo stitch stoppers, End Minders from the Tempestry Project, and any and all cute scissors, fun stitch markers, and cute project bags. Destiny loves Juniper and Ginger removable stitch markers (the best!), Firefly Notes notion tins, and pretty much can’t say no to a cute bag.

What’s your best advice for a new fiber enthusiast? Wind that skein into a cake! Use yarn that really makes you happy – you’re going to spend hours with it, so don’t skimp. And yes, “a bigger stash” is absolutely a legitimate project to buy yarn for.

What’s coming up in the future at your store? We’ll be at the Red Alder Fiber Arts Marketplace in February with Huephoria Fibers and much more, the Puget Sound LYS Tour in May, Fiber Fusion in June. New colors in Huephoria Fibers in the works!

Finally, can you give The Woolpack your recommendations for additional places to visit in your area?

There’s The Good Society Brewery right next door to us! Places to eat in the neighborhood that we like are Circa, down the block, and Marination Ma Kai down on the water. Local shops we love include Easy Street Records and Pegasus Book Exchange. And of course, we have Alki Beach and Lincoln Park for nature and some of the most stunning views around!
