Top Ten Free Holiday Patterns! A Woolpack Ravelry Round up

The Holidays are almost upon us and here at Woolpack HQ I am about to launch myself into serious seasonal prep mode. As we all know, there is something heartwarming about a handmade gift, and many of us are in the throes of knitting/crocheting/weaving gifts for the special people in our lives.
A dive into Ravelry will deliver thousands of ideas for gifts and decor for the home, and at times it can be overwhelming when it comes to making decisions on where to begin, so here is a Woolpack list of recommended free patterns for holiday gifting and decorating. There is plenty of time for most of these makes, but if you are short on time for this year they are great patterns to add to your Ravelry Library for the 2025 Holiday season. 1. Stylish Sweater – Santa Baby by Hanne Rimmen.
It is hard to believe that the pattern for this super stylish sweater from Hanne Rimmen is free! It’s design is timeless and could be worn throughout the winter season in many different color ways. If you’re quick, you could be wearing it for this year’s Holiday celebrations and gatherings. Named after the jazz song by Eartha Kitt, the sweater looks as classy as some of the gifts the singer asks for in the song, and just like the song this elegant design is sure to become a holiday classic.
2. The Mini Sweater – Tiny Sweaters by Miriam L. Felton
If you browse through Ravelry you will find many free patterns for Tiny Sweaters. The great thing about this one is that it has options. Choose from a plain sweater in a color appropriate for your celebration/color scheme, mini stranded color work designs, or use the embroidery charts to embellish your mini make.
Turn your jolly jumpers in to a garland, pin them to a fiber themed wreath or add a finishing touch to your gift wrapping. How could you not fall in love with these versatile little sweaters?
3. For Cozy Toes – Into The Winter Woods by Anna Lange
These pretty socks are perfect for keeping toes cozy throughout the winter months, and they look rather stylish too. Knit them in bold, bright, Holiday colors or keep it more neutral for a delicate feel – there is so much fun to be had with this adorable pattern you will want to wear them all year round!
4. Elf Size Socks – Tiny Tree Socks by Summer Lee
Summer Lee has inspired many of us this year with her delightful “Sock Project,” book, but did you know you can also make them in miniature? These delightful decorative socks really bring the seasonal cheer. This festive free pattern provides the opportunity to practice sock knitting on a small scale, use up scraps of yarn and bring a smile over the Holidays.
5. Holiday Blanket – Woodside Holiday Blanket by Jenny Watson.
How perfect is this beautiful color work blanket for cozying up indoors while the snowflakes dance outside your window? When it’s not keeping your lap warm, it will bring all the festive vibes whilst draped over an armchair or sofa. Size 10 needles mean it will knit up in no time and happy holiday smiles will light up the faces of all your visitors!
If you are the type of knitter that has stitches flying of your needles at a rapid pace, this blanket could be ready in time for Christmas. If not, add it to your Ravelry library and bookmark it as a slow project to begin in 2025.
6. Stylish Stash Busters – Scrap-Buster Holiday Light Garland by Carla DT Fisher
Everybody loves a stash busting project now and then, or maybe you need a creative idea for this year’s fiber advent calendar. Let crochet light your way this season and bring festive cheer to your home. This holiday light garland has so many opportunities for color play. Crochet “bulbs” that co-ordinate with your color scheme or create a beautiful rainbow statement piece to make your own festival of lights.
7. The Gift of Warm Hands – World’s Simplest Mittens by Tin Can Knits & Cloudburst Mittens by Arienne Grey
Who doesn’t love to have warm hands during the cooler winter months? I recently taught a beginning mittens class at The Nifty Knitter Shop and it filled my heart that so many of the completed projects will go on to become holiday gifts. I love both of these patterns and couldn’t choose between the two, so here they are at number seven.
The World’s Simplest Mittens by Tin Can Knits is my favorite pattern for a simple, quick off the needles pair of mitts. This generous pattern is not only free, but it includes instructions for sizes from toddler up to large adult, and in three weights of yarn. As always, Tin Can Knits deliver an easy to follow pattern with great instructional tutorials on their website for those moments when you need a little extra help.
Cloudburst Mittens by Arienne Grey is another generous free pattern, and it has been on my “to knit” list for some time. These elevated fingerless gloves are elegant but practical and make a beautiful gift. Make them with a soft fluffy yarn for all the cozy vibes.
8. The super quick win! – Biggie Braids Beanie by Taylor LaRocco
If you are short on time and want to make a super stylish gift, in my opinion, there is no better choice than to grab yourself a skein of super bulky yarn and size 13 circular needles and rustle up a chunky hat. At this time of year I become a collector of super bulky yarns and faux fur pom poms in a range of colors, each with a person in mind. It is so satisfying to produce a beautiful handmade gift in record time.
The exquisite, plump cables in The Biggie Braids Beanie add interest while you knit, and before you know you will have created a gorgeous holiday gift. Knitting one as a treat to yourself after knitting all of those hats for others comes highly recommended!
9. Festive Grannies – Easy Granny Christmas Baubles by Carmen Hefferman
I’m having a bit of a crochet era at the moment. Although I am first and foremost a knitter, I do love the soothing rhythm of crochet and I am enjoying working on a simple granny square blanket. Granny squares are also in the fashion spotlight at the moment and I’m enjoying seeing beautiful retro inspired garments in stores and on screen. So why not add some retro style to your Holiday tree? This lovely pattern is easy to follow and is another great stash buster! Make your grannies bright and bold this Holiday season, and give them pride of place when you deck the halls.
10. The Cutest Caramels – Christmas Caramels by Petite Knit
Here’s something sweet to finish with – knitted candy from Petite Knit, who of course has created a stylish project for the Holiday season. These adorable decorations are perfect for your littles to play with, to add a finishing touch to a wrapped gift, or to create a fun decorative Holiday feature – make a few and display them in a bowl. These cute caramels are certain to delight and they may be the healthiest treat that you come across this festive season – enjoy!
