Stories & Skeins for a Summer’s Evening
Keeley Richardson
Founder and Chief Fiber Officer
Listening in to a favorite podcast or audiobook is the kind of multitasking we relish in our yarny community. I for one adore finding the rhythm in my knitting needles while enjoying my latest book group choice being read to me by a soothing voice through my speakers – it’s the perfect way to combine two of my passions. If this sounds like your idea of a great time then you will likely be very interested to hear about a new weekly event happening on Monday evenings throughout July and August at the Nifty Knitter in Issaquah. Allow us to introduce you to Story & Skein.
Following on from the success of last summer’s String & Skein Series, owner Ben Bentler is inviting fiber friends to join him in the store for a literary adventure – live readings of his favorite novel, The Name of The Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss.
Ben explains, “Every Monday evening, we’ll set aside the noise, pick up a project, settle into a comfortable chair, and disappear into a story together. Whether you knit, crochet, spin, weave, stitch, read, listen, or simply enjoy good company, you’ll find a place waiting for you here.” The event is not a book club, it’s a chance to sit back, relax and find community while you create your latest project as Ben reads from the pages.
A little about the book: “The Name of the Wind”, is one of Ben’s all-time favorites and is very close to his heart. Although the book is categorized as a fantasy novel, it conveys human themes that we can all relate to and has a broad enough appeal to speak to many types of readers.
Ben fills us in, “…it is a book filled with magic, music, adventure, humor, danger, beauty, and wonder. It has all the things I love in a great tale. But underneath all of that, it understands something very human: sometimes we lose our way….this book also understands the things that help us find our way back. Friendship. Kindness. Curiosity. The joy of learning. The ache of music. The stubborn little spark inside us that refuses to go out completely…”
Monday July 6th is opening night and the fun begins at 5pm with live music. Guests will be invited to settle down for the story reading from 6-8pm. To celebrate the inaugural Story & Skein event all attendees will be offered an in-store discount after the first chapter has been read, invited to enter a raffle and refreshments will be served throughout the evening. Ben promises home baked goods and his favorite Chai – not to be missed.
The aim of Story & Skein is to offer a place where people can gather, relax and connect. Whether joining the fun every week or stopping by from time to time, you will receive a warm welcome and an inspiring literary adventure.
