There’s a cozy new space on E. Pine St, Capitol Hill, that provides a calming oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city for crafters and coffee lovers – Stitch Cafe Seattle. Walk through the door and you will find artisan coffee, a carefully put together menu of baked goods, and a delightful space to rest a while you work on your latest fiber project. What’s not to love?
A few days ago, I met with Sarah Chae, owner of the Stitch Cafe and keen fiber artist, to find out more about her welcoming space and plans for the future.
Sarah’s crafting journey began at the age of eight when her Mom first taught her to knit, and she has been passionate about the fiber arts since then. During the Covid pandemic she decided it was time to learn to crochet and fell in love with the artistry that can be achieved with a hook and yarn.
It was around this time that Sarah began to think about creating a space for fiber lovers to gather, find community and share their passion. The opportunity for Stitch Cafe popped up in 2023 when she found the perfect space in Capitol Hill. Planning applications and adapting the former bar space took almost a year, but in December 2024, Stitch Café opened its doors and has been offering a warm welcome and a haven for craft lovers ever since.
The Café has a range of teas, artisan coffees and a delicious selection of pastries from Fogrose Bakery in Kirkland on the menu. There’s a comfortable space with a cool vintage vibe to knit, crochet and relax. As the gray skies disappear and the weather warms there will be an inviting outdoor area for crafters to soak up the sun and work on their latest project.
At the moment Sarah has a carefully curated range of yarns from Korea on offer, and she plans to extend her yarn offering over the coming months with Stitch Café becoming 50% café and 50% yarn store. She also offers a range of beginner knitting and crochet classes. Keep an eye on the class schedule on the Stitch Cafe website – such a great place to embark on a yarn adventure!
When you pay a visit, be sure to check out the art wall. Sarah is keen to support the local art community and features all types of art across a range of mediums. There is a call for art every couple of months and all artists from Capitol Hill and beyond are encouraged to submit their pieces for display.
And if that isn’t enough to keep Sarah incredibly busy, she has also launched a series of knitting/crochet film nights in partnership with SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival). Sarah explained, “We host a cozy film day where people can craft while watching movies in a relaxed atmosphere. SIFF keeps the lights on so everyone can continue crafting during the film. We have 2 showings left! One is on Sunday, April 13th at 12PM featuring Labyrinth, and another is on Mother’s Day at 12PM.” It sounds like the perfect way to enjoy a movie and you can find all the details on the SIFF website.
